Canggu has changed. Hotel Tugu Bali has stubbornly remained its wonderfully eccentric self.

Sitting steps from Batu Bolong Beach, Tugu is part boutique hotel, part living museum and full-scale love letter to Indonesian art, history and design. The property is filled with antiques collected from across the archipelago, with carved timber, dramatic four-poster beds, tropical gardens and rooms that feel like they belong to completely different eras. No beige minimalism here.

The suites are individually designed, so choosing your room matters. Rejang Suites pair antique timber interiors with huge sunken baths, while Dedari Suites add private plunge pools and open-air bathrooms surrounded by tropical gardens.

Then there’s the location. You’re right by Batu Bolong Beach and within walking distance of central Canggu’s restaurants, cafés, shops and bars. That convenience comes with a catch: this part of Canggu gets lively, and some rooms can pick up noise from the beach scene at night. Light sleepers, take note.

Stay long enough to eat here. IWA focuses on Indonesian cooking, while Ji occupies an extraordinary historic Chinese temple with Japanese and East Asian food upstairs overlooking the ocean. There’s also a traditional spa, yoga and a long menu of cultural dining experiences.

Why We Like It

Because Canggu has plenty of places trying to look cool. Tugu has been here since before Canggu became Canggu. The history, art and glorious excess give it a personality that newer hotels would struggle to manufacture.
